Fire recovery: Large areas were impacted by 2024–25 bushfires (commonly reported ~80% of park / ~135,000 ha). Phased re-openings and residual track/road issues continue — including places such as Fortress, Chimney Pots and Red Gum related access in some advice. Check Change of Conditions every trip.

FAQ
Common Grampians questions
Short answers for planning. Official Parks Victoria access, camping and fire ratings always win over any blog — including this one.
Tap a question to expand the answer.
How far is the Grampians from Melbourne?
Halls Gap is roughly three hours / about 260 km west of Melbourne in typical conditions. Overnight multiplies walk quality and safety versus stacking every icon into a same-day return.
Is Mackenzie Falls open?
Treat Mackenzie Falls as status-critical during revitalisation works through much of 2025–2026. Always verify Parks Victoria the morning you travel and keep Zumsteins / open lookouts as Plan B.
What should I do first on a first visit?
From Halls Gap: one chosen Pinnacle route by fitness in the cool morning, then The Balconies and/or Boroka Lookout. Skip stacking Wonderland epic + Mackenzie + rock art into one daylight window.
Where should I stay?
Halls Gap for icons; Dunkeld for southern GPT / Mount William; Stawell for overflow services. Parks Victoria camping and GPT platforms are booked officially only — never through this site.
Is the park free?
Day visitor entry is generally free per publicly available Parks Victoria guidance. Camping, GPT platforms and some experiences have separate fees. Confirm on official pages before you travel.
