Mackenzie Falls (Migunang wirab)
Guide updated · verify open status with Parks Victoria before you go
Area: Wartook Valley & western approaches
One of Victoria’s most famous waterfalls — currently treated as status-critical: major revitalisation works have closed the precinct for much of 2026. Always verify live access; use Zumsteins and other open waterfalls as plan B.
- Major waterfall precinct — verify open status (revitalisation works through much of 2026)
- When open: plan 1–3+ hours depending on sections accessible
- Varies by open sections; do not assume full access
- Effort: moderate
- Best for: Iconic waterfall when open; otherwise plan Zumsteins / alternatives
Track status, fire danger, recovery works and facilities change — verify on Parks Victoria Change of Conditions before you go.

Mackenzie Falls precinct (when open) — verify Parks Victoria
Do not drive here assuming a full cascade experience. Check Parks Victoria project and park pages for current access, alternatives and reopening guidance.
How to get there
- Western / Wartook Valley approaches when open. Confirm road and track status first.
- From Halls Gap allow drive time and buffer — do not force a late waterfall dash if status is uncertain.
How to do it (step by step)
- Step 1 is always: check live status. If closed, pivot to Zumsteins, Fish Falls (when open), lookouts or Halls Gap walks.
- When open: stay on formed tracks and stairs; wet rock is slick; respect any temporary barriers from works.
- Carry water and grip shoes. Stairs and gorge microclimates change effort quickly.
2026 revitalisation realism
Public guidance through 2025–2026 has pointed to major revitalisation works at Mackenzie Falls (Migunang wirab), with the precinct closed for extended periods and reopening targeted toward later 2026 windows — always confirm current dates on Parks Victoria. This guide will never claim the falls are open without directing you to live official status.
Plan western days around what is confirmed open: lookouts, Zumsteins, scenic drives and Halls Gap walks. If Mackenzie reopens on your dates, treat it as a gift and re-check conditions the morning of.
Waterfall and western alternatives
When Mackenzie is closed, many visitors still have an excellent western Grampians day: Zumsteins area, other open waterfall walks if listed open, wildlife edges, and scenic driving — then return to Halls Gap for dinner. See our Mackenzie status article and wildflower / western itineraries.
Do not trespass works zones or use unofficial tracks to “see the falls anyway.” That behaviour is unsafe and disrespectful to recovery investment.
Practical tips
- Build Mackenzie Falls as a bonus, not the sole reason for a long drive, until works complete.
- Zumsteins picnic area and open short walks often fill the same western day when Mackenzie is offline.
- Never invent unofficial gorge access around works fencing.
