Park overview

Grampians National Park (Gariwerd) protects roughly 167,000 hectares of sandstone ranges in western Victoria — lookouts, day walks, multi-day ridgelines, wildflowers and one of the densest concentrations of rock art in south-east Australia. Land management and visitor information sit with Parks Victoria — always treat official sources as authoritative for closures, fees, camping and recovery works.

We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of Gariwerd, including Djab Wurrung and Jardwadjali / Jadawadjali peoples, and pay respects to Elders past and present. This site is not affiliated with any Traditional Owner corporation or government agency.

This unofficial guide organises the park by practical bases and experience types so travellers can match overnight stays to tomorrow’s walks, heat and fire risk.

Halls Gap township nestled in the valley, viewed from The Pinnacle

Halls Gap

From Melbourne typically ~3 hours / ~260 km west depending on traffic. Ideal overnight base for first visits and peak spring wildflower weekends.

The practical service hub of Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park: food, fuel, stays, wildlife edges and the shortest logistics for The Pinnacle, Wonderland walks, Venus Baths and key lookouts.

Sandstone rock formations with iron stains at Hollow Mountain, northern Grampians

Northern Grampians

Accessible from Halls Gap as a day trip or via northern highway approaches. Allow more remote-feeling logistics and thinner services than the Halls Gap valley.

Mount Stapylton, Hollow Mountain and publicly accessible rock art sites — sculpted sandstone and cultural depth with more commitment than Halls Gap boardwalk-style lookouts.

Silverband Falls cascading in Grampians National Park

Wartook Valley & western approaches

Separate drive from Halls Gap; do not treat as a five-minute side trip. Build buffer time. Fuel and shops are limited — stock up in larger towns.

North-west Grampians side around Lake Wartook / Zumsteins — day access for Mackenzie Falls when open, scenic driving and limited rural stays. Not a full-service hub like Halls Gap or Stawell.

View north from Mount William (Duwil) summit, Grampians National Park

Southern Grampians & Dunkeld

Further for classic Halls Gap icons; ideal for southern GPT finishes and Mount William.

Southern end of the Grampians Peaks Trail, Mount William ambitions and Dunkeld as a refined base — different rhythm to Halls Gap day-walk chaos.

Grampians Peaks Trail corridor

Requires transport planning (shuttles, two cars, or section out-and-backs).

The multi-day ridgeline spine of Gariwerd — not a single car park, but a logistics system of trailheads, platforms and section choices from north to Dunkeld.
