Wartook Valley & western approaches
Guide updated · verify open status with Parks Victoria
North-west Grampians side around Lake Wartook / Zumsteins — day access for Mackenzie Falls when open, scenic driving and limited rural stays. Not a full-service hub like Halls Gap or Stawell.
- Best for: Western park day (Zumsteins / Mackenzie when open), quieter rural overnight if inventory exists
- Time: Half to full day from Halls Gap; overnight only if you specifically want the valley side
- Separate drive from Halls Gap; do not treat as a five-minute side trip. Build buffer time. Fuel and shops are limited — stock up in larger towns.

Mackenzie Falls as status-critical
Treat Mackenzie Falls (Migunang wirab) as a high-value stop only when Parks Victoria says it is open. Through much of 2025–2026, major revitalisation works have meant extended precinct closures. This guide never claims the falls are open as a default.
Climbing around fencing “just to see the cascade” is unsafe, disrespectful to works investment and a fast way to create a rescue problem in gorge terrain.
Western days that still work when closed
Design western days around confirmed-open places: Zumsteins picnic and open short walks, Silverband Falls only when listed open, scenic driving, then return to Halls Gap lookouts if the west is quiet. A western day without Mackenzie can still be excellent if you stop treating the cascade as the sole scorecard.
Fuel and supplies are more reliable in larger towns. Screenshot status pages before you leave mobile coverage.
Stays — rural inventory, not a commercial hub
This site’s commercial stay cards focus on Halls Gap, Dunkeld and Stawell. Wartook Valley has limited cabin/lodge inventory some seasons — useful if you specifically want western proximity, not a replacement for Halls Gap services.
Most visitors day-trip west from Halls Gap or Stawell. That is the honest default when Mackenzie status is uncertain.

moderateOne of Victoria’s most famous waterfalls — currently treated as status-critical: major revitalisation works have closed the precinct for much of 2026. Always verify live access; use Zumsteins and other open waterfalls as plan B.

Itineraries that use this area
Full day from Halls Gap
Classic first-visit day (Halls Gap icons)
The high-volume first-visit path adjusted for conditions: Halls Gap base, The Pinnacle (route by fitness), The Balconies, Boroka Lookout, with easy backups when heat, fire risk or closures intervene.
2–3 days / 2 nights
2–3 day Halls Gap base
The sweet-spot trip length for most first visitors: one hard-ish icon day, one flexible scenery/culture day, and buffers for fire weather or closures.

What if Mackenzie Falls is closed?
Use Zumsteins and other open western options, or switch to Halls Gap lookouts and easy walks. See our Mackenzie status article for planning logic.
Should I book a Wartook stay for a first visit?
Usually no. Halls Gap is the better first-visit base for icons. Consider Wartook only when western days dominate your plan and inventory exists — and still verify Mackenzie status before you pin the trip on it.
How far is Zumsteins from Halls Gap?
It is a real drive, not a five-minute side trip. Build buffer time and do not stack it after a full Wonderland epic without an honest energy check.
