Where you start

Wonderland car park, Sundial car park, or other signed Parks Victoria starts

Several popular approaches exist. Wonderland / Grand Canyon routes are longer and more exposed; Sundial options are often chosen for a shorter climb to the lookout. Always pick a signed route and confirm current open status.

How to get there

  1. Base in Halls Gap for the shortest logistics. Follow Parks Victoria signs to Wonderland or Sundial car parks.
  2. From Melbourne: typically ~3 hours / ~260 km west to Halls Gap depending on traffic and stops.
  3. Car parks fill on spring wildflower weekends, school holidays and long weekends — arrive early or adjust plans.
  4. Do not leave valuables visible. Limited mobile coverage once you leave the valley floor.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Check CFA fire danger rating and Parks Victoria Change of Conditions the morning you walk. Extreme/Catastrophic days and track closures are turn-around rules, not suggestions.
  2. Choose a route that matches the weakest walker. Steep rocky sandstone, exposure and heat punish over-ambition.
  3. Carry more water than you think. Sandstone ranges can feel hotter and more dehydrating than the Halls Gap township.
  4. Stay on formed tracks. Shortcut scrambles damage habitat and create rescue problems.
  5. At the lookout: keep children close, respect edges, and leave space for others. The view is the reward — not an edge step.

Route choice: shorter vs Wonderland story

“The Pinnacle walk difficulty” is really several different walks. Shorter approaches via popular starts such as Sundial trade length for a still-rocky climb. Longer Wonderland Range / Grand Canyon approaches add scenery, stairs, exposure time and fatigue. Match the route to fitness, heat forecast and daylight — not Instagram ambition.

If anyone in the group is new to rocky tracks, choose the shorter signed option and treat Wonderland as a separate day. There is nothing incomplete about a careful summit and an early Halls Gap coffee.

Fire, heat and recovery realism

Gariwerd is a fire-shaped landscape. Extreme and Catastrophic fire-danger days can close the park or tracks. The 2024–25 bushfire recovery continues to affect access across large areas — residual closures, works and phased re-openings are real. Always check Parks Victoria live status.

Turn around if heat, storms, track damage or fatigue appear. Rescue in sandstone ranges is slow and resource-heavy.

How it fits a first-visit day

A realistic Halls Gap first day often sequences: Pinnacle (chosen route) → recovery lunch → The Balconies → Boroka Lookout — with Venus Baths or Silverband as easy backups if energy collapses. See our classic first-visit itinerary for timing and skip rules.

Mackenzie Falls (Migunang wirab) has been under major revitalisation works through much of 2026 — do not plan it as guaranteed. Check status and use Zumsteins / alternative waterfall options when the precinct is closed.

Practical tips

  • First visit classic: pair Pinnacle with The Balconies and Boroka Lookout on a Halls Gap day if energy allows.
  • Start early in summer heat. Late afternoon light is beautiful but fire risk and fatigue stack hard.
  • Wonderland / Grand Canyon is the scenic long story; Sundial is often the practical shorter summit path — verify current signed options.
  • If residual fire recovery or temporary works close your preferred start, switch lookouts rather than inventing an off-track alternative.
